The Beach Boys had just released their eleventh album in 1966, Pet Sounds, While today it is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, the reception here in the United States. Was less than favorable, While critics found the album favorable at best. it didn't really astound anyone. and only reached Number 10, on the Billboard 200. While their previous album, "Beach Boys' Party!" reached a peak of number 6.
After this "faliure" it encouraged Brian to write something even better. So he started work on what would be the first single for the album, taking 7 months of studio time to fully produce the track. This track would be released as Good Vibrations, costing about $50,000 to produce, which was unusually high for the time. Releasing in October of 1966. It was a Smash Hit, quickly reaching number 1 on the charts, and selling almost 300,000 copies after it's first four days, eventually getting certified platnium by December 21st, and spent seven weeks in the top ten, With this quick success, the studio gave brian the go-ahead to do whatever he wanted for the Beach Boys' next studio album.A concept album penned as "A Teenage Symphony to God" Would be 3 movements: Being based on Americana, The Cycle of Life, and the 4 Elements. This album would be called SMiLE!
